Ah, Destiny Gundam… the Gundam that is so balanced that it excels at nothing. I kinda feel bad for it since it got the short end of the upgrade stick compared to others; the Destiny is either outgunned or out-sword by the other Gundams and its one unique feature (them HIKARI NO TSUBASA!) didn’t really make an impact. Its design is pretty flawed too- all of its weapons requires its hands. Beam rifle, the ASS, the launcher, the Palma “Shining Finger” Fiocina, boomerangs… everything! And this is going against the likes of remote weapons, and beam sabers on the legs! Shinn got screwed. Despite all that, I like the Destiny Gundam… simply for the sole reason that it wields a huge ASS (anti-ship sword).
OUT OF THE BOX
17 Runners. Plated parts vs dull cream gray. Clear effect parts. Destiny’s display base and the Voiture Lumiere effect parts.
Manual. nuts and bits for the base. Only one beam shield. Why must there be sparkly glitter in the beam weapon effect parts?
The marker I use to go over the dull cream gray parts with to match the “frost silver” (it’s NOT chrome) plated parts… sadly, the colors do not match. at all.
Destiny’s body is pretty much your average MG assembly. You get all the works like inner frame, hatch doors, and swiveling shoulder points for added degree of motion. There is articulation between the upper and lower red sections that allows the body to tilt from side to side, and slightly forward and back. This is not good considering there will be a giant pair of wings attached to its back later…
So nice of Bandai to mold the red “scars” separately on this MG model! I dreaded painting it in back then for its original 1/100 counterpart. But yea, other than that… not really much to say here >_>. Well, Destiny’s model number is molded onto the red crest piece.
The arm assembly is just like the MG Strike Freedom’s which is just like the Infinite Justice’s; basically, the arms are all the same with some slight cosmetic differences. Nothing noteworthy except that the arms are reliably sturdy. Boomerangs just plug straight into the end of each shoulder. One open right fist for holding the Arondight and two Palma Fiocina palms that also functions for throwing the boomerangs later.
Like the arms, the legs have no gimmicks in and of itself and it is very similar to the other two Gundams in assembly. Note the difference in color between the silver plated parts and the cream gray.
The main point of the waist assembly here is that lousy mechanism that pushes the legs further apart a few degrees with a (rather weak) switch under the crotch for a wider stance. I think it is almost pointless. Besides that, everything else is standard fare.
The wings required more work than I thought as there are quite a lot of parts. One bit that surprised me after assembly was that the whole wing cannot rotate up or down when closed… well, nor when it is opened for that matter. While it might be fixed in position vertically, you can still kinda tilt it forward or backward after pulling the points out a bit.
Beam rifle… I think Impulse’s looks a lot better. This looks kinda weak.
Beam Cannon- You probably can’t really tell but I actually painted the tip of the cannon in dark gray to give it a bit more contrast.
“Arondight” Anti-Ship Sword. The handle required painting so I did just that.
That sparkling glitter pink was an eyesore so I painted it clear red and painted the Palma Fiocina beam in clear blue… like how it is supposed to be.
I wasn’t really feeling the decals and clear stickers that came with Destiny so I opted for the waterslides… same designs but at least it is easier to apply and without the nasty borders. This is also my first time experimenting with Mr. Mark Softer in combination with Mr. Mark Setter. The results were a bit disastrous on some spots and perfect on others; there is such thing as “applying too much” of this stuff. Gotta be careful not to let the either one pool on the decal or it can get ugly (literally). The deal was that I was supposed to apply the setter on the plastic, then slide the decal, and then apply the softer. Silly me to apply both at the end, one after another xD.
I also screwed up the topcoating process for this model; some of the parts frosted up when I was spraying in cold rainy weather outside. I took some 1000 grit sandpaper to remove the frosted parts off the wings (large surface area so it came out clean) while I used alcohol to clean smaller parts like the shoulders and beam rifle. Alcohol was effective but if you don’t clean the entire part, you’ll be left with noticeable uneven spots from where you cleaned in the top coat… then the parts will look like ass.
Your usual Gundam RWB color scheme with silver joints. I guess it works. The MG Destiny just looks sharp! sleek and pointy, its proportions are inline with the other MG SEED models such as Impulse, Strike Freedom, and Infinite Justice.
The Destiny is completely symmetrical minus its weapon setup. I don’t know what is it but I had a bit of a hard time getting it to stand straight properly… I don’t think it is the wings though. The legs just feel funny… like it is springy and kinda lacking in “muscle”. I mean, it stands fine but hard to get it to look imposing/confident.
The weapon racks are identical so feel free to swap the beam launcher for another Arondight if you so desire.
You can see one screw-up in this photo- the Faith emblem is actually a clear sticker on top of the waterslide since it got partially destroyed during the cleaning process. The bottom tip of the emblem is less “solid” than the top. Lame.
Equipped and ready to sortie!
Strike Freeom looks bigger…
No contest here on which one looks better right?
Seems like Destiny has been working out since the release of its 1/100 model.
No competition here either.
While it has no problems posing on the ground, Destiny is meant to be up in the air!
Once opened, I don’t think you would ever want to close them again ^^;
The wings stayed open firmly throughout the whole way and back-heaviness is just barely an issue… just barely.
Destiny could really use a better looking rifle…
LONG RANGE BEAM CANNON
The cannon is a lot longer than it appears. Half of its length is actually behind Destiny.
The cannon is supposed to dislodge from the rear rack so Destiny can wield it freely but that can only happen in the anime. If you remove the cannon from the rack, it will just kinda… flop around, as there is nothing holding it still.
I find it kinda dumb that this weapon requires a hand to operate while everyone else can just fire off the backpack. And to top it off, it’s a left handed cannon!
FLASH EDGE 2 BOOMERANG
Not sure if the “arch” of the effect part are accurate but it looks pretty cool ^^.
FLASH EDGE 2 BEAM SABERS
The beams for the saber version of the Flash Edge are just about as long as the beam for the Arondight… but only wider!
I think these would be a lot more practical in a MS duel than the Arondight even if it is not as cool.
There are no slots on the boomerang handles that go into the peg on its palms but the model can still hold the weapon snugly.
Shinn’s weapon of choice!
Long, sharp, and could be a bit heavy for its wrist at certain angles.
Needs some light…
Wings of Light
The pair of translucent wings are connected through these clear connectors that goes under the top and bottom wings. It takes some slight fiddling to get the fitment right but after that, no issues.
Up until this point, I thought the Destiny was a bit on the boring side to pose but after sticking the Arondight on, all is well again!
Gotta be sure to show off the wings too!
The wings of light aren’t really flashy; I had to use a secondary light source to make them shine. Oh the irony!
Still, Destiny looks gorgeous with the wings on. This is the main reason why I picked up the EBM version over the regular one!
Good shine on the right photo.
Wielding both the sword and cannon at the same time makes the model hard to articulate for a photo. It is recommended that the Arondight be held with both hands for stability.
Yes, I took a lot of photos…
My poor attempt at the boxart… which I think it is physically impossible to replicate anyway ^^;.
ORE NO KONO TE GA AOKU MOERU! SHOURI WO TSUKAME TO TODOROKI SAKEBU! BAKUNETSU! PALMA FIOCINA!!!… naw. It just doesn’t have the same ring.
The effect is composed of 3 parts- palm connection, the “burst”, and the beam.
Sad that Bandai only included one effect parts for this attack. Just one. why?!
This weapon/attack totally could have totally used more screen time. Domon can give Shinn a few pointers if they ever meet in SRW.
PROS AND CONS
– Abundance of weapons and effect parts is always nice… even if you can only wield up to two at a time.
– Proportions and design; it’s not “anorexic” looking but still very sleek and sharp. I’d say it’s a plus over the original 1/100 model.
– The Arondight and Voiture Lumiere wings rounds out the aesthetic appeal of Destiny.
– The waist… OH THE DAMN WAIST! It’s not “faulty” but the switch under the crotch is weaker than the joints that connect the legs to the waist. Meaning that I will be pulling the inner plates out instead of rotating the legs. I don’t see why it even needs this mechanism for widening the legs when other Gundams do it just fine without it.
– The waist… OH THE DAMN WAIST! the front and side skirts are sooo obstructive! The front skirt armor prevents the Gundam from crouching due to it being blocked by the front of the body when lifted up. The side skirts are even more annoying… the bottom half kept falling off! Not only that, it also scratches the hell out of the side of the red section of the body (if you look at the design, the side skirts go high up to the body; you can see the scratches on the topcoat in many of the photos and the skirts are turned sideways) so you have to turn them sideways if you want to spread the legs wider than normal. Oh, and they are easy to pop off. Ugh.
– Some of the nubs are in terrible locations… like right in front of the knee joint and the back of the elbow; the nubs are just out in the opening.
– Only one Palma Fiocina effect part and one (right) hand dedicated for holding the Arondight.
For a ~$10-15 premium over the regular MG, I’d say this is worth the cost. Or at least more worth it than the Strike Freedom FBM over the regular MG Strike Freedom. The wings of light certainly add to the aesthetic that I think one would be able to appreaciate more in person. All the good things about this model are inline with the rest of the SEED Destiny MG models so if you have either the MG Impulse, Strike Freedom, or Infinite Justice then you know what the Destiny is capable of. However, I’d rank this model last in the group in terms of “playability” no thanks to its waist that made posing more difficult than helping it. At the end of it all, I’d say this model was worth the money and even more so since you can always find it at a discounted price online (20-30%) any time of the year.

“AT LEAST I HAVE A TOMORROW!”
“That’s my line!” “WHY DON’T YOU GO CRY ABOUT IT?!”
“OPEN GET!” !!!!!!
“How the hell did you do that?!?”
“BAD STOCK FOOTAGE EDITING!”
YOUR DESTINY IS TO GO DOWN!
NOT WITH FREEDOM IN MY HANDS!
*drifts in space*
“Haha… I did it… Finally… I got my show back… my spotlight…”
