MG Acguy

First encountered this thing on the game Gundam Battle Assault series and it was an awesome combo machine if used properly (especially in 2). Sadly, its appearance in MSG was not memorable at all (though it did more in the 08th MS team by pwning a pseudo-Gundam). I was just all too happy to heard about its MG release back in the day and decided to pick it up when other priorities were taken care of. Soon after its release, it was almost universally agreed that it was a great (or one of the best) MG (it was also the first MG that Dalong gave a 100 to).

OUT OF THE BOX

HUGE parts on the runner. Awesome effect parts. A display base. Screws and spring(!) for the right arm/claw. No foil stickers.

BODY UNIT

Very different construction than a Gundam, the Acguy’s body is one solid chunk of plastic when assembled. It’s almost the size of a small potato. There are mechanisms on the parts where the limbs attach that allows them to pop out. The body unit consists of the backpack and the (lack of a) “waist”. So after the body, the model is already 25% done.

HEAD UNIT

I look at its head… and I just laughed. It reminds me of a hamburger for some reason. Giant clear dome is easy to smudge and scratch. Painted the eye with clear red because the pink CLEAR STICKER for it looks stupid.

ARM UNIT

This section has the most parts by far. Nothing too fancy but the spring-loaded claw is full of win. You press the “button” (gun nozzle I believe) on the center and the claw shoots out. As far as I know, this is the only MG with spring-loaded action!

LEG UNIT

Easy and simple construction yet effective in getting the articulation across. The fans beneath the feet can actually spin!

DISPLAY BASE

The EASIEST display base I’ve ever constructed. Three pieces- snap, snap, plop. DONE!

COMPLETED MODEL

Flat topcoated. I left off all of the decals except the Zeon insignia since I want it to look more “fun” than a “serious mobile suit” (which it really isn’t… haha).

CLOSE-UP

The Acguy is actually not small despite its looks and cute stature. It has has short arms and legs but they can also extend out.

Default Form

Extended… yea, it’s not as noticeable as MG Unicorn’s but the height growth is there^^;

I wish they would’ve put the release button to the claw at a better spot where your finger doesn’t obstruct the claw every time it springs out… but then the model wouldn’t be so smooth so I guess that works.

SIZE COMPARISON

Extended vs. RX-78-2 Ver. 2.0

Short

MG Turn A

MG F91

PLAYFUL

Other MGs such as Gundams look stupid when you put them in funky poses but the Acguy looks just cute xD.

This is the pose I left it in after the review.

range of articulation is absolutely amazing. Completely unrestricted in just about any direction!

Meditating…

The Acguy also have near-360 degrees field of vision as the eyes can move just about everywhere around its head… including the back!

More Silliness

Haruhi approves!

ACTION!

It’s just hilarious to see it run xD

Now that I think about it… the Acguy would not look out of place in Gurren Lagann’s world. It looks like a Gunman!

Them be some deadly claws

With no hands and no additional weapons, it is a bit hard coming up with action poses for this (Ac)guy ^^;

ACGUY KICK!

EFFECT PARTS

You know Bandai loves a model when they even bother to include DRILL underwater effect parts for it! It certainly adds a lot more motion to its poses!

Though they could have included two more missile effect parts and have all the missiles firing at once…

You get to arrange the effects however you like and with whichever missile you like.

It really does look cool!

PROS

– Superior articulation and unrestricted/unobstructed range allows the Acguy to do more poses than just about any other model out there.

– Solid, rigid and well balanced. I don’t think this model will ever fall by itself or cause any posing problems too soon.

– Easy and fun to assemble.

– Spring loaded claws!

– Most importantly, girls dig the Acguy. They will all go “OMG it’s so cute! LOL” which is usually follow by “so umm… what exactly is it?”

CONS

– It is piloted by Akabanana or however you spell the name of the dude in the gorilla suit.

VERDICT

Whatever your opinion of the Acguy is, whether it looks ugly and stupid or cute and cuddly, there should be absolutely no doubt that this is hands down one of the best MG released by Bandai in terms of playfulness and enjoyment. Even if it is not, it is one of the few where I can say it is just about flawless; there really isn’t anything noteworthy to complain about for this model (due to the fact that it is so plain and simple… but that’s the charm). The Acguy rocks!

    1. I saw that on Ngee Khiong’s blog some time before you commented. And even before then on one of the promotional posters of that Gunpla anime coming out. With the Beginner Gundam coming out as an actual model, it should’ve been obvious that it was going to be an item coming out. Probably was, but nobody paid any attention. And still aren’t; most are still going bonkers over Z’s latest MG Astray Red Frame WIP post. :)

      1. I made a teddy bear reference too!

but yea… that HG sure is awesome. Even Bandai knows everyone love the Acguy! Now you can really give one to a girl!

    1. Bandai must be a lurker on this blog. I mean you just made a comparison with something and a few months later they made it a reality. now if we can only have any proceeds on our banks ^^,

        1. I remember thinking about it long before the Gunpla anime came out with lineart of and even a product of a Teddy Bear Acguy model. And at one time during a Google search quite a while ago, I found similar kitbashes of it looking like a Kowala and/or other creatures.

  1. Hey Z!

Great job on the modeling lately. It seems with every post, your photography and reviewing skills get better and better. I’m excited to see your Shining Gundam!

If your blog hopping gets boring, think of dropping by my new blog…my old one was Websters Blog, by the way.

    Best,

    Adam

  2. Looking over this review again, I wonder how the Acguy would fare if I had submitted it for the “Playing with Plastic” competition…

  3. Z, I will give you a freaking reward if you can make the Acguy look BADASS.
Badass in serious-business, I’m-reading-to-kick-ass, don’t-EFF-with-me type of badass.

    Not the cute badass-ery.

  4. so i just got the HG and MG form of this gundam. I’ve wanted it for so long now and finally gave in when i could get them both for a combined price of $40.
so anyways I’m going to paint the HG lime green and black or chrome and black.
and its going right on my car dash.
the mg will join the ranks on my shelf

  5. Aaaaw, this is so cute :3 I didn’t pay notice for non-gundam units, but this one was made awesome, credit for you too :D
I re-started my Gunpla hobby cuz I ‘randomly’ accessed this site by random googling xD well-done, Z… Thumbs up!!

PS : I’m currently waiting for my MG WZC, I’ll use ur review as a cornerstone ;)

  6. I bought an Acguy from Amazon, with the description as MODEL KIT, MG, MASTER GRADE, etc.
So I bought it ($44.24) and the dealer sent me the Mobile Suit In Action figure.

Got my money back, able to keep the item, and bought the MG.

I do not recommend items from “Koolz Dealz” on Amazon :[

    1. If you live in the US (or Canada, too, maybe), I suggest you go with another dealer. HLJ’s sales are really good, but the shipping costs can be pretty outrageous. Add to the fact that the US dollar is dying, then you’ll probably end up spending more than you have to…

That’s if you live in the US… <_<

Provided all I've said so far is relevant, I recommend Gundam Store and More or iShop2go. I've never used the latter, but they're price are good and shipping isn't bad plus GSAM has a terrible habit of not updating for weeks or even months (check around Christmas, they've got great deals and always update).
